Indie Game Publisher Merge Games Shuts Down After 15 Years

Share:

After 15 years in the business, publisher Merge Games has officially closed its doors, resulting in the layoff of its 22-person staff. The news was shared on social media (post that is now deleted), where the company reflected on its journey, stating: “We brought hundreds of indie gems to storefronts around the world and loved every moment of it!”

Throughout its 15 years, Merge Games helped bring a variety of indie titles to a wider audience. Some of their notable games include Sunnyside and Spirittea. They were also responsible for publishing physical versions of well-known titles like Dead Cells and The Thaumaturge.

In 2022, the company’s parent, Zordix Game Group, was acquired by Maximum Games. As a result, Merge Games became a subsidiary of the newly formed Maximum Entertainment, which included other branches like Modus Studios. However, changes within Maximum led to a restructuring earlier this month. Staff cuts were made, and Merge’s Chelford office was closed.

With the shutdown, titles still in development under Merge’s banner, such as Spirit of the North 2, will now be handled by Maximum Entertainment. Despite the changes, Merge Games ended their statement on a positive note, thanking fans for their loyalty and adding, “If you see someone from Merge, just know they’re an incredible person that worked their hardest.”
