Creator of the popular SFO: Grimhammer mods for Total War: Warhammer, Michał “Venris” Cieczko, shared insights about his new game Whispers of the Eyeless in an interview with 80 Level. Venris, who is self-taught in both modding and game development, has been working on this project with a small, dedicated team of five full-time and two part-time members. The team communicates daily via Discord, despite being spread across the globe.
Venris who lives in Toruń, Poland, has drawn inspiration from the country’s rich 17th-century history for the game’s setting. In Whispers of the Eyeless, players control the First Prophet of the Dead Gods, aiming to take control of the city of Aranthor by spreading the worship of dark gods. The game delves into a dark fantasy world where the line between good and evil is blurred. The art style is influenced by games like Darkest Dungeon and Children of Morta, with a hand-painted aesthetic to create the feeling of a moving painting.
– Our game features turn-based combat, where you select your actions between turns. You can also use Gifts granted by the Dead Gods to gain an advantage in battle; unfortunately, tapping into these dark powers comes at the cost of some of the Prophet’s sanity. You must manage his sanity properly, or he will experience significant debuffs. The Prophet’s dark powers can also drain the sanity of his enemies, applying these same debuffs to them – said Venris.
The game focuses on attrition, meaning players must not only win battles but also minimize damage to keep going. Fates Mirror, a survival mode, offers a faster-paced experience without the main campaign’s storyline. Venris partnered with Camlann Games to help with advertising and administrative tasks, allowing the team to focus on development. Camlann, a gamer-friendly publisher, was a natural fit for the indie studio, helping them overcome funding challenges through Kickstarter support.
The team plans to release a demo during Steam Fest in October, followed by an Early Access release. The full campaign will come later, aiming for a full release next year. You can read the our preview of our game here.
