You won’t find RPG titles like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 or Kingdom Come: Deliverance II on this list, as their status as indie games is questionable. One is an AA title close to being AAA, and the other firmly falls into the AAA category. To keep things focused, we’re highlighting smaller-scale projects. Here are the top 10 best indie RPGs of 2025 so far. We likely won’t focus on games that transitioned out of Early Access, but instead on titles released for the first time in 2025.

FlyKnight

FlyKnight is a first-person, indie Soulslike RPG with a retro RuneScape-inspired aesthetic. You play as a FlySquire tasked with defeating the evil witch Lunamoth, whose curse prevents bugs from growing wings. In the game, you’ll explore a handcrafted dungeon with side paths, loot, and tough bosses across a 3-5 hour campaign. It also supports solo or up to four-player co-op, includes a fishing minigame, and offers a nostalgic, King’s Field-inspired experience. Despite minor bugs and limited replayability, its charming visuals and 5,95€ price tag earned it overwhelming praise.

Promise Mascot Agency

Promise Mascot Agency is an open-world mascot management sim with a Yakuza-inspired crime drama twist. You play as Michi, a disgraced yakuza exiled to the cursed town of Kaso-Machi to revive a failing mascot agency. Alongside Pinky, a sentient pinky finger, you recruit quirky, living mascots like a sobbing tofu block or a yam-obsessed cat to promote businesses. Gameplay blends driving a customizable Kei truck, managing mascot jobs, and resolving their mishaps via tactical card-based battles. Don’t forget to explore the town, uncover conspiracies, and rebuild the community in a 15-20 hour adventure.

Eternal Strands

Eternal Strands is a third-person action-adventure RPG. You play as Brynn, a young Weaver, exploring the Enclave to uncover a lost civilization’s secrets. The game features physics-based magic (fire, ice, telekinesis) for creative combat and exploration, letting you freeze enemies, burn obstacles, or climb massive bosses. With a world inspired by Shadow of the Colossus, it offers 18-35 hours of gameplay, blending boss fights, crafting, and a story of magic and mystery.

Sultan’s Game

Sultan’s Game is a card-based narrative RPG. Set in a dark fantasy inspired by One Thousand and One Nights, you play a minister forced to participate in a cruel game by a tyrannical Sultan. Each week, you draw one of four cards: Carnality, Extravagance, Conquer, or Bloodshed and must complete its challenge within seven days or face execution. You’ll manage resources, allies, and choices to survive, navigating love, betrayal, and moral dilemmas. Decisions shape the story, leading to multiple endings like becoming a trusted minister, overthrowing the Sultan, or summoning dark gods.

Keep Driving

Keep Driving is a pixel-art management RPG. Set in the early 2000s, you play a young driver embarking on a road trip to the Way Out East festival. Manage resources like gas, money, energy, and car durability while navigating a procedurally generated open world. Pick up hitchhikers with unique stories and skills, customize your car, and face turn-based “battles” against road hazards like potholes or tailgaters. With multiple endings, 1-4 hour playthroughs, and a great soundtrack, it captures the nostalgic freedom of a coming-of-age journey.

Dark Deity II

Dark Deity II is a turn-based strategy RPG. Set 25 years after the original, it follows Gwyn and Riordan, descendants of the first game’s hero Irving, leading the Eternal Delegation against the expanding Asverellian Empire threatening Verroa. You will command 20 heroes with 45 branching classes across 30 voiced story chapters, featuring deep customization, tactical grid-based combat, and a built-in randomizer for replayability. Choices also shape alliances and story outcomes, while bond scenes deepen character relationships.

Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree

Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree is a 2.5D action RPG with Soulslike and Metroidvania elements. Set in the decaying dark fantasy world of Faelduum, you play an Inquisitor defying the King Priest to uncover secrets tied to Entropy and a witch’s spirit. Choose from six classes, wielding melee, magic, and a grapple hook across 60 quests and 75 locations. The game also features deep skill trees, crafting, and challenging combat.

Look Outside

Look Outside is a survival horror RPG. Set in an apartment building, a mysterious event turns anyone who looks outside into grotesque monsters. You play as Sam, scavenging for food, weapons, and supplies while managing hunger, hygiene, and morale. You’ll explore warped halls, fight over 150 unique creatures in turn-based combat, and interact with eerie characters, some recruitable as allies. With 10-12 hours of gameplay, multiple endings, and a Lovecraftian body horror aesthetic, it blends dread, humor, and retro pixel art.

Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector

Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector is a narrative-driven, dice-based RPG. Set in the Starward Belt, a gritty asteroid belt, you play as a Sleeper, an android with a human mind, on the run from a corporation and a crime syndicate after a failed reboot that left you amnesiac and malfunctioning. Commandeer a ship, recruit a crew, and take on high-risk contracts across multiple hubs in a 12-15 hour campaign. The game features tabletop-inspired mechanics, where dice rolls determine outcomes, with a new stress system adding tension.

Cabernet

Cabernet is a 2D narrative RPG. Set in a 19th-century Eastern European-inspired town, you play as Liza, a young doctor turned vampire, navigating her new unlife. Choose to retain your humanity or embrace nihilism as you manage vampiric powers like bat transformation, invisibility, and enchanting humans. The 14-16 hour story explores themes of alcoholism, social conflict, and corruption, with choices shaping relationships, multiple endings, and a morality system.

Peripeteia

Peripeteia is a first-and-third-person immersive sim RPG. Set in an alternate-history cyberpunk Poland, you play as Marie, a cybernetic supersoldier turned mercenary navigating a post-Soviet city rife with corruption and clashing factions. Blending stealth, shooter, and RPG mechanics inspired by Deus Ex and System Shock, it offers hacking, climbing, and multiple mission approaches in a gritty, expansive world.

Conquest Dark

Conquest Dark is an action RPG with roguelike and survivors-like elements. Set 237 years after the Black Planet’s arrival, you battle undead hordes and cosmic horrors in a dark fantasy world. Choose from classes like Barbarians, Oathkeepers, or Acolytes of Kuu, starting as a weak grunt and building powerful loadouts through Dark Ritual runs. With isometric, fast-paced combat inspired by Vampire Survivors, you dodge, craft builds, and unlock abilities across haunting ruins.
